Chaplins Furniture showcases nude color trends for Summer.
Post-Impressionist artist Paul Gaugin was living in isolation in Tahiti when he wrote that color was the lingua-franca of dreams. Although he only found fame posthumously, his understanding of colour as a secret language of the unconscious has marked the world of art and design ever since.
This striking oriental-inspired lamp was originally designed in 1935 for the Hotel Aulanko in Finland. It bears all the hallmarks of Eastern aestheticism, transforming humble materials such as wicker and canvas into a timeless, ethereal luminaire.

Inspired by the delicate fronds of an unfurling leaf, the Fern Chair by Sebastian Herkner is a stately yet cosy outdoor lounge chair. Harnessing natural materials such as teak and rope, it creates the impression that one is being enveloped by Mother Nature herself.
It’s a theory that gains further traction when we consider what hues emerge during times of upheaval. Ever since the beginning of 2020, our digital and print feeds have been dominated by soft nudes – a comforting and restorative counterpoint to the frenzied global Zeitgeist.
It’s a palette that’s not without its controversies. Nude has long been associated with a fleshy peach tone – often at the expense of more diverse skin tones. In interiors, however, we’re talking about not just one colour but a rich symphony of hues ranging from stonewashed oatmeal through to deepest caramel.

The JH97 Lounge Chair is a classic Danish design by Fritz Hansen. Its long, elegant frame is inspired by the graceful physiology of a pelican, which wraps around the generous seat and back cushions. The upholstery is available in plush velvet, leather or an on-trend Bouclé fabric. Available to purchase from September 2019, it’s definitely one to watch this season.
Shown for the first time at the 1958 Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Furniture Exhibition on a stand called ‘Landhuset’ (Country House), Børge Mogensen’s BM0865 Daybed is being relaunched by Carl Hansen & Son as part of a growing collection of the renowned Danish architect and designer’s work. The daybed’s comfortable and tranquil form is optimized for wellbeing in any space.
One of our favourite ways to think about nude palettes is as a springboard for tactile interiors. Versatile yet welcoming, they can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. For an understated luxe look, consider incorporating creamy alabaster coffee tables and marble splashbacks.
Nudes also have a natural affinity with traditionally organic materials such as bamboo, wicker and jute. As we each search for ways to live more sustainably, it makes sense that such a scheme would come back on our radar.
They say that good things come in small packages and the 2097/18 pendant is no exception. Created in 1958 by legendary Italian designer Gino Sarfatti for luxury lighting manufacturer Flos, the 2097 pendant/chandelier updates neoclassical ideas of lighting with contemporary forms and is now available in a smaller 18 branch version.
Our enduring affair with all things nude also speaks to a new desire to let materials speak for themselves. One clear example is the woollen Gravel Rug by MENU. Using nature as the starting point, designer Nina Bruun, shunned colour dyeing in favour of natural fibres in tonal hues. The result is a wonderfully cosy modern rug, that promises to add depth and tactility to any interior.
However, it’s not just the Scandinavians who are hard at work rediscovering their roots. The Fence E Nature collection by Cassina is characterized by organic, almost primitive, forms and elements. Each backrest is handwoven using natural willow in an attempt to intimate the palette of Mother Nature.
The Bat Lounge Chair is the second collaboration between Gubi and award-winning design duo, GamFratesi. Much like the Beetle Chair, the Bat draws on the biomorphic features of its namesake, its curiously winged armrests a source of comfort in both residential and commercial spaces. Seen through these lenses, it becomes clear that nude colour schemes are as much about aesthetics as they are about hope. In sticking to soft earthy hues, they provide a visual exploration of a better, more heartwarming world – free from toxic materials and rooted in craftsmanship.
