TREND SPARK! Week 9 | 31.03.2008

Acne Studio Acne is opening its first North American store in New York this month. The Swedish fashion brand is known for its denim and edgy collections, including a newly launched children's wear range, which is actually just miniature versions of their adult ranges. Already sold in several department stores stateside, this new retail space will allow the US customer to have the full Acne Studio retail experience, explained quite nicely on their website:

"A studio is a room where an artist, photographer or sculptor works. A place where performers practice and exercise, and movies are made or produced. It is a place where musicals and sound recordings can be made, and a room from which television or radio programs are recorded and broadcasted. Above all it is a place for inspiration and creativity."

Their first Paris branch is also scheduled to open this month.

Corso Como's Another exciting store opening this month is 10 Corso Como's new Branch in Seoul.

This is another example of how the luxury brands are scrambling to get into the Asian markets.

10 Corso Como originally opened in 1991 in Milan, by Carla Sozzani, and features an art gallery, a book shop, a restaurant, a cafe, and a fashion department stocking some of the most sought after fashion brands.

They also just about to launch a website, after being in business after ten years without one. 10 Corso Como is considered to be one of the top fashion retail destinations, alongside Colette and Dover Street Market.

RodarteAnd while I am on the subject of Dover Street Market, last week I spotted Rodarte's new collection, or, should I say, glove collection, on the third floor.

The fingerless gloves, decorated with studs, were totally punk/rock'n'roll yet strangely desirable. There was a pair with ten one inch spikes on the each hand.

This is the sort of thing that is sure to get you hassles at customs, but all in the name of fashion! (which reminds me of a womenswear designer from one of London's top department stores who recently got detained OVERNIGHT in an airport holding cell because she was carrying Mulberry's grenade-shaped leather accessory. How embarrassing, I hope they sent her a free bag!)

Maison Martin Margiela Maison Martin Margiela has just announced they will be launching their first perfume in association with L'Oreal.

As a backlash to all the celebrity perfumes being launched (last one announced was Halle Berry) it seems there is a strong market for more unusual scents by unexpected brands.

Comme des Garcons is the leader in the "avant garde perfume movement," the winner definitely being the Guerilla perfume (which featured six decoy bottles and one real one) and the new scent, entitled 888 which is supposed to capture the smell of gold. There is also the pheromone based perfumes (which are meant to physically attract men to the wearer.) I somehow doubt Margiela will be going this route, though.
