TREND SPARK! Week 6 | 03.03.2008

By Alexandra Suhner, London Editor | Week 7 | 03.03.2008

When you’re reading this issue; I will be off in Mauritius having some well-deserved rest (and avoiding Paris Fashion Week!) I'll be back the first week of March with a full round up of all of the Autumn Winter 2008/2009 shows. In the meantime, if you, like me, are suffering from fashion week overdose, here are some things to do that are completely NOT fashion.

Travel Spark!

Culture Spark!

Ice Hotel in Sweden Or, if you want to get away but aren't in the outdoors-in-the-sun mood, the Ice Hotel in Sweden is featuring an exhibition where all of the rooms are designed by artists.

The hotel, in Jukkasjärvi, 200km north of the Arctic Circle, is built every year during the winter with ice from the Torme river and also features an Ice Church and Ice Bar.

The Art Suites feature lighting designs designed by students from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, which include installations that play with the senses and the concept of open space through lighting. I have no idea how you stay warm in there but it looks amazing.

Vanity Fair Portraits London Fashion Week was host to another glamorous private view at the National Portrait Gallery, this time for the opening of an exhibition of portraits from Vanity Fair magazine.

The subjects include actors, politicians, musicians and people from t e world of sport, fashion, and the arts.

Some favorites include portraits of Claude Monet, Charlie Chaplin, Demi Moore, Madonna, and Arthur Miller.

The exhibition features 95 years of portraits and work by some of the last century's most well-known photographers: Man Ray, Cecil Beaton, Annie Liebovitz, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, Mario Testino, and more.

Vanity Fair Portraits, on until the 26th of May at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Book Spark!

Music Spark!

Disposable - A History of Skateboard Art by Sean Cliver Although I tend to buy mostly fashion magazines, my book collection is always focusing on culture, photography, and graphics.

It is easy to have a collection of all the mega fashion coffee table fixtures, but its far more interesting to have a variety of inspiring books that are slightly more rare.

Disposable - A History of Skateboard Art by Sean Cliver is just that. Available at Magma, this book features a collection of over 100 skateboard graphics dating from up to 30 years ago.

Skateboarding’s prominent role in youth culture and its effect in marketing and fashion makes this book a very interesting resource for ideas and inspirations.

Burning Man

Its time to start thinking about summer plans and this year there are loads of great music festivals to go to.

Most of the big festivals have just announced their line-ups and tickets are going on sale.

Since the celebrities have become a fixture at most of the best ones, they have started offering more luxurious accommodation, so instead of a tent, you can stay in a fab tipi or a cute caravan with access to all running water necessities.

Some of the best ones include Burning Man, Glastonbury and Lollapalooza.
