Iconique Societás Excellence in Fashion Photography Awards

Winners of the Iconique Societás Excellence in Fashion Photography Awards

Nicoline Patricia Malina

October 21, 2007 - Iconique and Societás announced the winners of the 'Excellence in Fashion Photography Awards 2007'.

Indonesian born, Netherlands based photographer Nicoline Patricia Malina has won first place in the Iconique Societás Excellence in Fashion Photography Awards 2007. Educated at the HKU Utrecht School of Art, Nicoline illustrated both strong technical skills and an inspired and original approach to fashion photography.

Nicoline faced some stiff competition, as entries flooded in from the world over from both up and coming and established professional fashion photographers. Unlike many photographic competitions, the awards invited entrants to interpret the theme 'Fête des Fleurs' (Party of Flowers) by submitting fresh, not pre-existing work.

The awards judging panel included top British hat couturier Louis Mariette - creator of the world's most expensive hat ever, valued at £1.5 million and made of platinum and diamonds, avant-garde fashion designer Arkadius - who Colin McDowell dubbed 'mad, bad and dangerous', McCann's Head of Global Brand Innovation, Justin Champney, Iconique founder and Editor-in-Chief, Joost van Gorsel and Co-founder of the awards, Melissa Sterry, CEO of Societás.

Joost van Gorsel said of the awards 'It's inspiring to see how the Internet can break down boundaries and gives access to young and established talents to show off their range of skills to a global audience. Not only did we see inspiring work by photographers but also the people who make a shoot possible: make-up artists, hairdressers, models and so on. This first edition marked the start of a new kind of fashion photography award that is accessible to all with ambition and talent. We, Iconique and Societás, will work hard to make this initiative an industry standard'.

BA Commercial Photography and BS Graphic Design graduate Samantha Bremer was voted First Runner-up for her entry 'Circus' and former fashion model Denise Boomkens took the title Second Runner-up for her entry 'Wallflower'.

Melissa Sterry said of the awards 'Their reach is truly international, something that is essential at a time when some of the most exciting and interesting photographers are working in the Developing World and cities and countries not generally associated with the fashion industry. Once upon a time the best talents migrated to Paris, London, New York and Milan, but not any more. Fashion Photography is a truly global business and this adds to the cultural diversity expressed in the genre. More than anything else the judges found that the submissions from entrants to this years awards reflected the fact that good fashion photography is not just about the clothes or the model, but about the concept behind a trend; the fantasy or concept that drives the aesthetic'.
