A Massive Spectacle: The Reissue of the Ultra Goliath Frames

January 12, 2011 - A few weeks ago, Montreal-based Vintage Frames Shop announced the release of a limited edition of the stylish Ultra Goliath 2 glasses as part of their Dr Shapiro Collection.

Originally produced in the late 1970s in a dirty blond colour, a few years later the frames started being manufactured in black and brown. The unconventional generous size of the frame quickly made the sunglasses iconic pieces of eyewear, being sported by actors or musicians such as Darryl McDaniels (also known as DMC) of Run DMC, Michael Caine, and Harry Carey or, more recently, to portray colourful film characters from the 1970s, such as Robert de Niro's Sam 'Ace' Rothstein in 'Casino' and Elliott Gould's Reuben Tishkoff in 'Ocean's Thirteen'.

Late in 2010, Ultra partnered with the Vintage Frames Shop to release a fifty-pair run edition of the matte black frame as part of their Dr. Shapiro Collection. The Ultra Goliath 2 comes with either its original clear lenses, or with a grey gradient set of lenses...read the full article
