Brooke Kanani Sachs

By Senay GOKCEN

Editor-in-Chief

August 23, 2011, [New York] - Brooke Kanani Sachs is an emerging jewelry designer and maker.

Her pieces are made by hand from start to finish, including clasps, hinges, and chains which makes her collections unique.

Brooke was trained in the lost wax method of casting, which began with her college studies in sculpture. She has been apprenticed for four years with an old world craftsman from Poland where she had learnt that anything is possible with a little time and determination.

18K Yellow Gold, Sea Glass, and Horseshoe Crab Cufflinks

While walking on the beach sea glass is an ever-present treasure. I have always taken chances with using unconventional materials such as shells, seedpods, horseshoe crabs (no I don't scour the shallow water hunting them down, I collect them off the rocks after they have dried out for a week or so), and cedar apple galls (tree fungus). I am now comfortable in saying that these materials have become part of my signature. These cufflinks are whimsical; they will dress up any outfit.

Since she has been grown up on the beach yet also in the forest; many of her inspirations are derived from nature.

"I grew up Ever since I can remember I have been collecting natural objects that I viewed as beautiful. I now have a vehicle in which to showcase them. I am intrigued by the anthropomorphic quality of trees, the ripples in the sand that are left behind by the waves or wind, bones, shells, rocks, horseshoe crabs, seedpods, birds, animals, and many other things that we tend to take for granted in our demanding lives.

The juxtaposition of these objects with the refined qualities of precious metals and stones is a way of paying homage to nature in a way that I truly see fit. Everyone can relate to these objects, they are everywhere if we slow down for a moment and take a look around.

My pieces are little sculptures in their own right. Free standing and truly three-dimensional. Each one seems to possess it's own story, it's in the eye and the hand of the beholder to investigate them to their fullest degree"
says Brooke Kanani Sachs.

Brooke's jewelry pieces start at $400 in sterling silver and range to $10,000 for items in 18-karat gold.

"The Alligator Ring" 18K Yellow Gold, Seedpod, and Diamond

The Alligator ring is somewhat mysterious. At the top it features a diamond, which is set into the center of a water caltrop seedpod, sometimes called a devils pod. I collected these on the beach ever since I was child and never knew exactly what they were. While making this piece I did a lot of research and finally figured it out. Under this water caltrop sit two alligators with arms outstretched holding the water caltrop in place.
18K Yellow Gold, Limpet Shell, and Baguette Diamond Ring

When I walk on the beach or in the woods, it is never just a walk; it is a search for inspiration, a search for something that strikes me as beautiful. Whether I find a piece of wood, a horseshoe crab tail, a rock or a shell, each one has its purpose. On this particular day this limpet shell struck me; this ring in made to honor the beautiful colors and patterns found in nature, simple, elegant, and always surprising.
Black Opal Ring, 18k Yellow Gold and Black Opal

Viewed from the side this ring suggests a coral polyp form. The tentacles are stretching upwards and holding on to the black opal protecting it from the ocean above.
